Simon Madden is one of the greatest ruckmen to play Australian Rules Football. By the time he was twenty-two he was captain of Essendon, replacing Ken Fletcher. In 1981 he was replaced as captain by Terry Daniher due to his poor form caused by a run of injuries. He was in the ruck in the 1984 and 1985 premiership teams and he won the Norm Smith Medal for being best on the ground in the 1985 flag. He won Essendon's best and fairest award in 1977, 1979, 1983. The only Other Players at Essendon to have won the award more times are Dick Reynolds and Bill Hutchison. He was the bombers leding goalkicker in 1980 and 1982. He also holds the games record of 378 and goals record of 575.
Simon is also in the Essendon Team of The Century and was also named number 5 in The Champions of Essendon.
