During a 2 decade, 365 game career with both Central Districts in the SANFL (107 games) and Hawthorn in the VFL (258), 'the Rat' proved himself one of the greatest rovers in the history of the game. He was also one of football's most decorated and consistently successful players, winning both the Magarey and Brownlow Medals, 4 club best and fairest awards – 2 at Hawthorn and 2 at Central Districts - 4 VFL premierships at Hawthorn, All Australian selection on 4 occasions, AFL All Australian selection 3 times, and a record 15 state of origin appearances for South Australia. John Was also selected as the forward pocket in the Hawthorn Team of The Century. The keys to his success were pace, ball handling, effective disposal skills with both hand and foot, and his uncanny ability to gain possession of the ball from the baottom of the pack.
