A champion ruckman with rare endurance, Madden was a handy part-time forward who could gain leverage off his opponents body. He won four best-and-fairest awards, a Norm Smith Medal in 1985 and captained Victoria. He won premierships in 1984 and 1985, and played some of his best footy under pressure in big games.
